Kitzingen bridges are permanent construction sites

Building – renovating, building – renovating: a perpetual cycle in a town like kitzingen. No sooner is one construction site finished than the next one is announced. The bridge structures were the target of questions from the city council to the city administration recently. What is their condition? Which ones need to be renovated? An interim balance.

Tobias haupt from the civil engineering department in the city’s public works department answered the editors’ questions about the bridge structures in question.

"Beauty error" on the north bridge

North bridge: the damage is noticeable on the sidewalk. The protective layer over the concrete has chipped off in several places. But in this case haupt remains calm: "prudence error" he calls this damage. Technically, they are not a problem, and therefore no redevelopment is necessary.

During the construction of the north bridge, the concrete was sealed with a double coating to prevent water and salt from penetrating into the depths. A procedure that is no longer used today, because this coating only lasts a few years. The remedy will come from the building yard, which will clean the chipped areas. Nothing more is needed.

Rust spots on the sudbrucke

Sudbrucke: there is no protective layer for the bridge that was put into operation in the 1980s. The structure now has some rust spots on the bike path. A consequence of the corrosion caused by the salt water that penetrates in winter. Haupt explains that the building yard will renovate the affected areas on a selective basis.

Renovation case old mainbrucke

Old main bridge: it has been closed to traffic since 2011 and has been used as a bicycle and pedestrian bridge since then. The bridge is a redevelopment case, and a comprehensive one at that. This will not be cheap for the city. However, because the burden on the building is limited, the administration is playing for time in this case. The next main inspection of the bridge is due in 2020; they want to wait for that before discussing a general renovation.

Bridge in jahnstrabe ready for demolition

Brucke jahnstrabe: the normal motorist will hardly notice the small structure above the eheriederbach, just before the junction with kaltensondheimer strabe. Pedestrians are more likely to notice it because there is also a stop for buses and the shared cab. The bridge is getting on in years and, according to haupt, has also become "dilapidated". Therefore, heavy traffic is no longer allowed to pass through jahnstrabe. In the next two years, the city administration wants to renew it. Say: the city will have the bridge rubbed down and completely rebuilt. This will not be easy, because the abutments are at different heights, but this problem can be solved technically, is the representative of the civil engineering department convinced.
