Osram and samsung settle led patent dispute

Light-emitting diodes, or leds for short, are considered key technology in many electronic products.

The settlement was reached before the U.S. Trade commission ITC in washington. According to information obtained by the dpa news agency from official circles, the two companies have agreed to share the use of the disputed technologies. According to the information, in this context, samsung will make a "significant payment" to osram, the exact amount remained unknown.

A samsung subsidiary had, among other things, applied for an import ban on corresponding osram products in the u.S. And claimed patent infringement. Osram, the opposing party, had also filed suit, as is common in many ongoing patent disputes. Proceedings are also pending in sud korea and germany.

The LED patent disputes concern, for example, the use of this future technology in lamps, televisions, and computer and cell phone screens. In the dispute with another korean company, LG, osram won a stage victory before the hamburg regional court in june.

The fact that osram has gained the upper hand in the tussle over the important LED technology is particularly significant in view of the fact that siemens is planning to spin off its lighting subsidiary and float it on the stock market as an independent company.
